FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C. - June 25, 2025

Statement: Churches for Middle East Peace Joins 19 National Christian Denominations and Organizations Urging Congressional Support for the Iran War Powers Resolutions.

June 25, 2025, Washington D.C.- Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP)  joined 19 National Christian Denominations and Organizations in a letter to Congress supporting the Iran War Powers Resolutions (S.J.Res.59 and H.Con.Res.38), introduced by Senator Kaine and Representatives Khanna and Massie.

While CMEP welcomes recent reports of a ceasefire announced on June 23, it is still imperative for Congress to officially weigh in to ensure the United States is not drawn into another war. We believe diplomacy is the best path forward.

As the letter states, "Diplomacy remains possible, necessary, and morally imperative. Congress must reassert its constitutional role in matters of war and peace and pass the Iran War Powers Resolution. We pray for wisdom and discernment for our leaders. May you seek God’s guidance to pursue peace, protect human life, and uphold the values of justice and compassion."

June 24th, 2025

While we welcome recent reports of a ceasefire announced June 23, 2025, as people of faith, we write with an urgent appeal for Congress to prioritize diplomacy and de-escalation over war with Iran. We strongly oppose the recent U.S. military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. The Constitution rightly grants Congress the sole authority to declare war—a fundamental safeguard that must be upheld. We urge Congress to exercise its constitutional responsibility by scrutinizing any military action against Iran and by supporting the Iran War Powers Resolutions (S.J.Res.59 and H.Con.Res.38), introduced by Senator Kaine and Representatives Khanna and Massie.

No president should unilaterally decide to take the nation to war. Israel’s unprovoked attack on Iran on June 13—and the subsequent exchanges between the two countries—did not justify U.S. involvement. In fact, the attack led to the cancellation of planned U.S.-Iran negotiations aimed at securing a new nuclear agreement. President Trump’s June 21 decision to bomb three Iranian nuclear sites has only escalated tensions, further destabilized the region, and placed U.S. personnel and interests at risk. Already, we have seen American bases targeted by Iranian retaliatory strikes.

We believe diplomacy—not unauthorized and dangerous military escalation—offers the most straightforward path to lasting peace and security in the Middle East. Diplomatic channels must be urgently pursued and fully supported. We must learn from the mistakes of the past, including the devastating wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and avoid repeating them.

Diplomacy remains possible, necessary, and morally imperative. Congress must reassert its constitutional role in matters of war and peace and pass the Iran War Powers Resolution. We pray for wisdom and discernment for our leaders. May you seek God’s guidance to pursue peace, protect human life, and uphold the values of justice and compassion.

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of this urgent matter.

Sincerely,

Recent CMEP Statements and Press Releases:

Jun 24, 2025: CMEP Welcomes Iran-Israel Ceasefire
Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP) welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel, and we urge all parties to uphold this fragile but essential step toward de-escalation. We commend efforts by regional and international actors who helped broker this cessation of hostilities and strongly encourage all parties, including the United States, to ensure the ceasefire holds. Any further provocations or violations risk reigniting a dangerous new round of violence that could engulf the region in wider war.

Jun 23, 2025: CMEP Calls for Protection of Syria’s Christian Communities following a suicide attack on a Church in Damascus
Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP) mourns the devastating suicide bombing that took place at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Prophet Elias in Damascus, Syria, on June 23, 2025. We stand in deep solidarity with Syria’s Christian community—our brothers and sisters in Christ—who have endured generations of hardship, especially over the past 14 years of war, displacement, and persecution. We lift our prayers for the victims and their families, and for the safety of all Christians in Syria who, despite enormous challenges, continue to courageously keep the faith alive in the very land where Jesus walked. The presence of the Christian community is a sacred and vital part of Syria’s cultural and religious fabric. Christians and all minority groups must be protected.

Jun 13, 2025: Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP) Condemns Israeli Strikes Against Iran and Urges De-escalation of Regional Aggression
CMEP condemns in the strongest possible terms Israel’s recent attacks on Iran, including reported strikes near nuclear facilities and within civilian areas. These reckless and unlawful actions risk the lives of hundreds of millions of people across the Middle East and escalate the threat of a catastrophic regional war. We also call on Iran to cease its counterattacks against Israel. Military solutions are not the answer and will only cause more death, destruction, and harm. Such escalations not only cause civilian deaths but further destabilize the entire peace and security of the region.
