Tell Congress: Support H.R. 2590

On Thursday, April 15, Rep. Betty McCollum introduced groundbreaking legislation in support of Palestinian rights. HR 2590 ensures U.S. taxpayer funds are not used by the Israeli government to detain and abuse Palestinian children, demolish Palestinian homes and structures, or to further unilaterally annex Palestinian land in the West Bank. The legislation would also require the Secretary of State to annually certify U.S. funds are not used in support of any of these practices. Congresswoman McCollum was joined by 13 of her colleagues as original co-sponsors: Reps. Bobby Rush (IL), Danny Davis (IL), Andre Carson (IN), Marie Newman (IL), Ilhan Omar (MN), Mark Pocan (WI), Raul Grijalva (AZ), Rashida Tlaib (MI), Ayanna Pressley (MA) Jamaal Bowman (NY), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY), Cori Bush (MO), and Jesus "Chuy" Garcia (IL)

As long as the practices outlined in this bill continue, the possibility of a just and lasting end to the conflict in Israel-Palestine--one in which the human rights of all peoples is honored— is greatly diminished. Congress must make clear that the United States will not provide financial support to the ongoing violation of Palestinian rights. HR 2590 is a necessary start in helping to ensure the United States can be an honest partner for peace to both the Israeli and Palestinian people.

As a constituent and person of faith, I am writing to urge you to support HR 2590 the Defending the Human Rights of Palestinian Children and Families Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act. The legislation would ensure no U.S. taxpayer funds to the Israeli government are used to detain and abuse Palestinian children in Israeli military detention, support the seizure or destruction of Palestinian homes and property, or to facilitate the unilateral annexation of Palestinian territory. The legislation will also require the Secretary of State to certify annually that U.S. assistance to Israel is not used to further any of the prohibited activities. Since the start of 2021, while also facing a global pandemic, there has been a rise in demolition orders throughout the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, Palestinian children continue to face mistreatment at the hands of the Israeli military detention system, and formal annexation is still on the table. HR 2590 will ensure Congress extends the necessary oversight so that U.S. taxpayer money is not used abroad in a manner inconsistent with our values. Congress must be part of the solution helping to guide U.S. policy in the direction that will encourage a just and lasting end to the conflict in Israel-Palestine. Taxpayer-funded money to the Israeli government should not be used to violate Palestinian human rights and continue the military occupation of Palestinian territories.
