The group, T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights, made clear it does not favor an end to all military aid. It still supports defensive military aid to Israel, such as the Iron Dome, the missile shields that intercept short-range rockets. But at this time, it is opposed to further offensive weapons such as those decimating the Gaza Strip, where to date more than 43,000 Palestinians have been killed with bombs and munitions that have helped to flatten the enclave and left tens of thousands homeless.” | | | | | | Israeli activists surround Alice Kisiya, center, as they try to enter her family's land, after the Palestinian family was forcefully evicted by Israeli settlers backed by soldiers who declared it a closed military area, in the West Bank town of Beit Jala, Friday, Aug. 2, 2024. Nearby, Palestinian Muslims faced Mecca and said their own magrib prayers. After the prayers the two groups sat together on a woven plastic mat along with a few Christians and others, to share a meal, roast marshmallows and get to know one another in a peaceful vigil, joined by another 40 people online. Drawing on Christian theological principles, they critique the normalization of weapons trade, highlighting how it often exacerbates conflicts and undermines efforts toward peace and justice. Dr. Hosler and Dr. Vollrath argue for a more deliberate, peace-oriented approach to policy-making, urging faith communities to advocate against systems that prioritize profit or political power over human well-being. This reflection challenges readers to consider the moral consequences of enabling violence through the global arms trade. The article was originally co-authored by Kevin Vollrath, Ph.D. (then-fellow) and Nathan Hosler, Ph.D. (board member — present) in April 2022 in affiliation with Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP). | | | | | | | Mini-Series #5 Holding on in the Dark: Spotlight on the Case for The Armenian Quarter On Tuesday, Nov. 19th, as part of the final installment of CMEP's Holding on in the Dark mini webinar series, CMEP explored the case of the Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem. The Armenian Quarter is part of the Old City and is within Occupied East Jerusalem. This Quarter, home to around 2000 Armenians, has been under threat. In April of 2023, a deal was signed between the Armenian Patriarchate and an Israeli firm called Xana Capital, which sent shockwaves through the Armenian population worldwide. Around 25% of the historic quarter would be leased for 99 years to the company to build a hotel on. This deal was made without the consent of the quarter's residents and fueled fears of displacement. Since then, the Patriarchate has tried to backtrack on the deal, taking it to the Israeli courts, saying that they were misled by Xana Capital on the conditions. As a result, Israeli settlers have begun to attack and intimidate the Armenians living there periodically. CMEP was joined by Malkon Marizian, an Armenian Palestinian living in Jerusalem who told us about the trouble facing the Armenian Quarter today and what we can do to support the local Armenians there. | | | | | Jordan Duffner as a member of CMEP’s Catholic Advisory Council Jordan was recently interviewed on the Across the Divides podcast with Daniel Bannoura.
