April 19th News Bulletin

Here’s what’s upcoming and what you may have missed at CMEP and in the news.

Thank you for joining us for CMEP’s 2024 Advocacy Summit last week in Washington, D.C.

The summit began with a vibrant dinner to mark our 40th anniversary, and we were thrilled to see it completely packed with attendees. Thank you for joining us, if you were able to attend. The evening was filled with messages from leaders committed to peacemaking, setting the tone for the rest of the summit. Wednesday and Thursday were dedicated to education and advocacy, with a chance to advocate directly with elected officials. Our Palestinian delegation, consisting of Rev. Dr. Jack Sara, Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb, and Shireen Hilal Awwad, was also able to meet with a variety of Congressional offices during the week. The summit concluded with a prayer vigil outside the Capitol building.

Several attendees mentioned that this was their first CMEP event, so to all who joined us for the first time last week, welcome to the CMEP community! We are thrilled to have you. Thank you to all who attended, supported, or donated to the Advocacy Summit; your commitment and engagement are crucial to our work, and we look forward to continuing this journey together. Thank you.

'The Peace Movement Has Failed': Why This U.S. Evangelical Wants to Stop Arming Israel

Haaretz Interview with Rev. Dr. Mae Elise Cannon

"Christians are becoming increasingly skeptical of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians – and not just in Gaza. While much of the disillusionment is fueled by the reported plight of Christians in the Holy Land, some Christians ground their dissent within their own spiritual beliefs. Perhaps no leader is more vocal on this front than Rev. Dr. Mae Elise Cannon, executive director of Churches for Middle East Peace.”

Over 250 Humanitarian and Human Rights Organisations Join Call to End Arms Transfers to Israel, Palestinian Armed Groups

Save the Children

“A group of more than 250 humanitarian and human rights organisations from across the world– including Palestinian and Israeli groups – are demanding that all States immediately halt the transfer of weapons, parts, and ammunition to Israel and Palestinian armed groups. A statement demanding this action, which was initially issued in January with a signee list that included sixteen major humanitarian and human rights organisations, has in recent months grown substantially as the war in Gaza has worsened. Now, a milestone of over 200 organisations have signed onto the statement, showing the increasing relevance and urgency of this call.”
